Sophisticated Thursday

Sophisticated Thursday

By Brittany Jahn

Sometimes, Thursday is a bummer. Monday has successfully come and gone. Tuesday and Wednesday have been forgotten. Friday is waiting in the tantalizing future and the weekend is so close you can taste it.  Thursday quietly sits in the middle of it all; quietly waiting for someone to come along and give it its own claim to fame, its own title, its own precious pet name.

Out to cure the Thursday blues comes a group of sophomore boys who believe that all Thursday needs is a little TLC in the form of sophistication. Thus they created “Sophisticated Thursday.” This means that on every Thursday of every month they sport an array of button down shirts, nice sweaters and ties to give themselves an undoubtedly sophisticated look. While this may sound like an orchestrated plan to get everyone to dress up all fancy (cotillion, anyone?), the idea behind Sophisticated Thursday was actually quite simple.

“One day at lunch I asked my friends if they liked dressing up,” founder of the idea Andy Rusinek explains. “When they agreed yes I asked them which day they hated the most.” And Sophisticated Thursday was born.

As you may have seen on a few daily bulletin announcements, Sophisticated Thursday is making its attempt to grow at CCA.  “It actually has evolved, it’s like Beatle mania,” jokes sophomore Brandon Kirshner.  As close to Beatle mania as it may be, sophistication enthusiasts are always trying to get more students in on the idea.  Rusinek concludes, “It would be nice if everyone dressed up, but we don’t want to force them.”

The nice thing about Sophisticated Thursday is the calming demeanor in which it is presented. There are no obnoxious posters plastered in the halls, flyers do not stare at us in the bathroom mirrors, and there is simply no pressure to be involved. The idea behind Sophisticated Thursday is that it will get around by word-of-mouth and people will participate as they please.  Whether or not the students of CCA will loyally join the sophisticated movement is unknown, but it wouldn’t hurt for students to give it a try. Like this group of sophisticated sophomores it may give you a reason to revamp your perception of Thursday. If the Beatle mania comparison is true, we might end up liking sophistication so much that we start singing The Cures’ “Friday I’m In love” to the tune of “Thursday, I’m In love.”
