Shuttered: Shutter Island Review

Shuttered: Shutter Island Review

By Laura Odegard

Director Martin Scorsese’s newest film, Shutter Island, is a mind-boggling journey into the insane. Based on the novel by Dennis Lehane, the movie tells a twisted story about what goes on at an insane asylum on a remote island off the New England shore in 1954. The criminally insane patients undergo suspicious “treatments” in order to cure their insanity under the supervision of Dr. Cawley (Ben Kingsley), along with his very loyal staff consisting of nurses, physicians, and heavily armed correctional officers.  Federal U.S. Marshall Teddy Daniels (Leonardo DiCaprio) is called to investigate with his new partner, Chuck (Mark Ruffalo), to help find a patient who seems to have escaped the premises through thin air.  The “missing” patient, Rachel Solando, is unstable and dangerous.

Solando was sent to Shutter Island after having drowned her three children in a lake by her house, then arranging them at the dinner table for her husband to find when he came home from work. Scorsese does an excellent job of keeping the viewer on the edge of his or her seat as the disturbing twists throughout the story begin to unravel. While on the island, the feeling of claustrophobia engulfs the U.S. Marshalls as they slowly begin to feel there is no escaping insanity.  In the trailers, Shutter Island is marketed as a horror film, but it is more like a mind game teasing your thoughts and bending your mind, trying to make you believe in a reality that may or may not be truly happening. For those of you who enjoy thrillers or are a fan of Scorcese films, be sure to check out Shutter Island.
