As CCA students sauntered into their second class of the day, pondering their latest test results, the sound of rattling coins jolted them back to reality. Second period teachers across the school hopefully shook their collection boxes in the direction of entering students. All this week, students have rifled through their bags for some coins to donate to the cause they recently deemed most important: Haitian Earthquake Relief.
At a recent Canyon Crest Club President meeting with ASB on Jan. 11, they planned a competition to decide which club would hold the Spare Change Drive. Each club put up posters describing their worthy cause, and finally at lunch on Friday the 15th students were able to place their vote for the cause that they felt was most important. The American Red Cross’s Earthquake Relief for Haiti won with an overwhelming 51% majority.
The devastating earthquake that shook Haiti last week and left the poverty-stricken country in ruins inspired many students to empty their pockets and give to the cause. Along with regular shocking news reports of how much damage the tremor has wreaked, ASB also spread awareness of the fundraiser with slideshows of startling photos in the daily bulletin provided by the American Red Cross.
The Outreach Committee of ASB was the driving force behind all the publicity and awareness. “They all worked very hard on this event and I am very proud of them” manager Sierra Thernes said of her fellow committee members Trey Huhn, Holly Ravazzolo and Kailey Toro. Thernes explained ASB’s plan for the conclusion of the event: “Each 2nd period class has recieved a box to collect money in throughout the week of January 19-22. On Friday we will be collecting the boxes and counting each class’ total.” Although this event is unprecedented, she hopes “we can still collect a generous amount for the Haitian people. In the past we have made $2000 in Pasta for Pennies after 2 weeks.”
ASB awarded a cupcake party to Ms. Lawless’ second period class for raising the largest amount of money. And despite the fact that this fundraiser lasted on 4 days, the school raised over $4000–more than double than what was raised during previous, longer coin drives.
