While you were glancing at the Wikipedia entry on Invisible Man over winter break, you may have noticed an appeal for donations on the site. You might have noticed was a banner which linked to a letter from Wikipedia’s founder Jimmy Wales. The site needed funds in order to pay for its staff and run its servers. Wikipedia is solely financed by donations since there are no advertisements on the site.
The financial troubles that Wikipedia faced over winter break raised an ominous doubt in the minds of some CCA students. Is it possible that Wikipedia might cease to exist? Completing history worksheets without the aid of Wikipedia’s treasure trove of information would be intolerable. Many students rely on the constant accessibility of information via Wikipedia. “The fact that Wikipedia is always justa few clicks away cannot be more soothing to my curios mind,” remarked Anthony Tokman a CCA sophomore. “I would simply be lost without Wikipedia.”
Yet luckily for Anthony and other Wikipedia loving students, the fundraiser was quite successful and netted $7.5 million in eight weeks. Wikipedia needs these funds in order to pay for its servers and employees. Now the banner that you will see above the group theory article is a thank you from Jimmy Wales. The fundraiser that targeted Wikipedia users is over though Wikipedia will still welcome donations.
